5th H1N1-related death in Singapore

Recently, a 34 year old Chinese woman passed away of pneumonia (a disease), with Influenza A (H1N1) infection as a contributing factor. Meanwhile, four more other H1N1 patients were admitted into ICU. The youngest is a 9 year old Chinese girl. Luckily, this little girl's condition is stable. The second case was a 23-year-old Malay man who had a history of epileptic fits. He developed high fever, drowsiness and seizures on July 25, and was admitted directly from the Emergency Department to the ICU on July 26. Laboratory tests confirmed he has Influenza A (H1N1). His condition is stable. The third patient was a 29-year-old Indian woman with no previous medical history. She sought treatment at Changi General Hospital (CGH) Emergency Department on July 25 after two days of fever, cough and chest discomfort. Test has confirmed that she has been affected by Influenza A. The fourth patient admitted into ICU was a 34-year-old Chinese man with a history of Down's syndrome. He sought treatment at CGH's Emergency Department on July 23 after two weeks of cough, sore throat and fever. And he was too confirmed of Influenza A. It is said that more people will die. If this gets worse, less people will want to travel overseas which will affect many countries economy. Same goes to Singapore. If less foreigners come here, Sentosa would very quiet. (Because that is where foreigners usually goes)I hope this doesn't get worse and hope everything would go back to normal.

Our Environment

Protecting our environment is important. Since the development of science and technology has improved for the past few decades, our environment had been harmed by our doings. Every day the amount of electricity wasted is unbelievable. Now people are more aware of the harming of our environment. That is why Earthlings are willing to participate in activities like Earth Hour, Earth Day and so on and so forth. Though, there are still who still don't care about what is happening around them. They don't change their usual routine to a more energy saving one. Seeing everything we are doing to Mother Earth, I am seriously afraid that my life wouldn't last long. Why can't people think for themselves? If they don't, why can't they spare a thought for others? There are still people who want to live on to persuade their dreams. There are still young people out there, wanting to live on and find their own lifes. We should not think that the Earth could not be saved. If that's what you think then you are wrong. There are still ways we can save the Earth. For example, we can turn on the fans instead of switching on the air-conditioning at night. Even if we on to the maximum for the fan, it still can save ten times less of electricity then turning on the air-con. I am not encouraging people to stop using the air-con. What I meant was to just switch it on once in a while. Because of our growing population, we had to get rid of trees to build houses. This is what we call deforestations and it will lead to soil erosion causing landslide to take lives away. Look what man had done to the Earth. There had been more cases of acid rain and, unlike the past, Singapore used to be a fresh aired country. We would not have to switch on the air-con and harm Mother Earth. So let's save the Earth together.

Influenza A H1N1

H1N1 is the subtype of influenza virus A and the most common cause of flu in human. Some strains of H1N1 are endemic in human, including the strain responsible for the 1918 flu pandemic which killed 50–100 million people worldwide. Less virulent H1N1 strains still exist in the wild today, worldwide, causing a small fraction of all influenza-like illness and a large fraction of all seasonal influenza. H1N1 strains caused roughly half of all flu infections in 2006.Other strains of H1N1 are endemic in pigs and in birds. It is spread like those common diseases. Through air from coughs and sneezes or touching those infected. It cannot be transmitted from eating cooked pork.Countries like China,Japan,India,Thailand and Malaysia ETC.That is why we should always prepare early. For example, taking our temperature frequently or just by covering your mouth when you sneeze or cough. Now a days, after the H1N1 incident, we must take our temperature every Monday in school. I think it is very effective as we would be able to consult the doctor before the condition gets worse. Most importantly, my fellow classmates would not be affected. Once, we had to go straight to class in the morning and after recess. That is only for a few days but from that day on, we would have to go back to class after recess as it save more time.I am doing my part to keep Singapore free of disease and also to keep myself healthy. Now, I wash my hands with soap as I always just rinse it under low-running tap. So let's do our part and make Singapore disease free.

Kindness

This week is about kindness. This value is what everyone want to have. Some say that having kindness is very easy but some say is the most difficult. Why? It really depend on your character. Kindness is about having to do something like helping others people when they are in need. No matter they are young or old, we should always lend a helping to others. Kindness is the act or the state of being kind and marked by charitable behaviour, marked by mild disposition, pleasantness, tenderness and concern for others. People being kind is important. Being kind to other does not need a reward after every kind doing. We leave a good impression and gain other's trust. These are the only things we would ask for from others when did something kind. Actually being kind is very simple. You can help an old lady across the road or helping your neighbour by babysitting their child. I remembered I once help a foreigner to translate. I was at the bowling centre and I went to some beverages. This lady was having difficulty communicating to the cashier as the cashier does not know how to speak Mandarin. I happened to be there so I helped to translate. It really helped. The lady just gave me a smile said a very nice thank you and walked off.I could not helped and too, smiled. I felt very pleased and happy. Maybe I could help the school by donating some money generously so that the school to renovate some part of the school. I could always be a good role modal to the lower primary kids and they might followed. They may followed the wrong doings but they can always changed those bad habits. So let make our part in the community and make the world a better place.

SA1 Oral Exam

I was relieve when I heard that I was having my oral on 22nd then on 23rd. First reason, I would not want to have an examination on my birthday...(Yes....Yes....My birthday is on the 23rd ....So what!) Second reason, I was afraid that I would forget everything as I was nervous. This apply on the every oral exam I have actually. Anyway, the date of my oral exam change because I needed to go for Math Olympiad on 23rd.When my friends and I was having lunch together, we helped each other by giving tips and good advice.( I was sitting with most of the smart girls in class...Their tips and advice really helped a little bit.)We then assembled at the hall waiting for arrangement to be made. The few moments was frightening. We were crossing our fingers when the head mistress went near to the examiner's table. Everyone was praying hard that she was not the examiner. A miracle did happen. Our examiner was actually a friendly teacher. Finally it was my turn and I went to sit down. ( Of cause I greet the teacher before I sat down.)I took a deep breath and started reading the passage. Followed by the picture, it was funny when I think back. I stumbled a lot of time and it was different when I was preparing. Surprisingly, when I made a mistake in the picture part. The teacher actually corrected me. I was surprised and grateful to him. It wasn't for him, I would not have realised my mistake. We then proceeded to the conversation. His question was about accident. The teacher asked me whether I had seen an accident on the road. My answer was yes and it shocked him. I went on to elaborate and I expressed it exactly how it happened. It was the end of my English oral exam and it was going to be the end of the world. I had practised very hard for both my English and mother tongue oral. My language used to be very poor. I really worked hard but no matter how hard I tried. I still did not improve.Let's get back to subject. So, I waited for my turn for the mother tongue oral. At first, I was quite confident but after I found out that my examiner was actually my own teacher. That really made me have butterflies in my stomach. I took a deep breath again and just went ahead. Everything pass so quickly. The next thing I know that I was walking home, smiling.

International Friendship Day

The theme for this year International Friendship Day is getting to know more about ASEAN.On International Friendship Day,people spend time with their friends and express love for them. Of course, it is called international is because people express their feeling to their friends from other countries. This event started in USA,1935.It dedicate in honor of a friend. The United States , proclaimed first Sunday of August as the National Friendship Day. Since then, celebration of National Friendship Day became an annual event. The noble idea of honoring the beautiful relationship of friendship caught on with the people and soon Friendship Day became a hugely popular festival.Basically, ASEAN stands for Association of Southeast Asian Nations. ASEAN was formed by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand on 8 August 1967.Since then, membership has expanded to include Brunei, Myanmar, Cambodia , Laos and Vietnam. Its aims include the acceleration of economic growth, social progress, cultural development among its members, the protection of the peace and stability of the region, and to provide opportunities for member countries to discuss differences peacefully. Seriously, I don't really enjoy this year International Friendship Day. From the previous sentence, I think you can see that I don't like this year activities organised by the school. I think that it is quite boring unlike the one we have last year. Well, i have friends from Thailand. Actually, it is my father's colleague's wife. She opened a shop in Bugis Junction. She make things that are really beautiful. Some of the items are imported from Thailand. The school could maybe can show a power point slide outside the HOD room about ASEAN because I had seen pupils looking at them.

Learning Journey To Singapore History Museum

Among all the learning journey I went, this was one of the meaningful ones I been. After the whole thing, I think that there were not enough time. Everything started at the entrance of the history gallery. The Companion was distributed to my friends and I ( including my teacher and the parent volunteers) This gadget is an enlarged version of an Ipod but only that it is filled with information of the gallery. We were lead down a long and slippery spiral slope. Oops... Forgot to mention how to use the Companion...There is buttons that is labeled from 0-9.When you see a number on the floor just press the number on the Companion and it will tell you more on the exhibit. All the exhibit were very interesting. My teacher told us not to go in a group but I just grabbed my friend's hand( by the way, her name is Cheryl) and told her to follow me.We entered the gallery and my friend wanted to just browse through everything but I held her back as I tried to listen to all the sound clips. Soon, we were the only one left at the starting of the gallery. I told her not to worry, we won't get lost in the gallery. Some exhibits and the sound clip was a bit scary. The room made it more scary. We walked in fear as if we were in a haunted house in an amusement park. When I checked my watch. 45 minutes had past and we were only at about number 45-50. We would have to rush through the rest of the exhibit but we learnt quite a lot there. I thought it was the end of the journey but I seems like I was wrong. We went up huge flight of stairs and we stop outside two different exhibits.I went to the fashion exhibit first. There, I saw many dresses and sets of clothes that were from the different generations. My favourite one was the one with an orange vest and shorts. The high heels were extremely high. I listened to a story of an old tailor. She told everything about her past and how she get her interest in her career. We exchange places with the other half of the class and we went in to the film and wayang gallery. There were three screen showing some of the films from the past. When I saw the horror part, I was sort of scared. I felt a shiver down my spine and I closed my eyes as tightly as possible. I dared myself in watching the film and in the end, I found myself laughing my head off.Instead of being frighten, it was hilarious as it made no sense at all.Everything was familiar to me when it came to the wayang exhibit. My grandmother always bring me to wayang shows when I was younger. We next proceed to the food exhibit. It smelt different kind of smell and I really hate the coconut.I wonder how the made it. Just pulling a ring and the smell just come out like that.I listen to the history of the TokTok mee. I wanted to listen to the others but there was not enough time to do so.I wish I could go back to the museum. It is sure a good place to be at when you learn.I learn quite a lot of Singapore History. I want to thank the principal and the teachers to organise such a wonderful experience for us. Thank You...:)

Healthy Eating

Eating healthily is important. If one is not eating healthily, his or her stamina would not be as good as others and diseases would be their best friend. Food like vegetables and fruits are always the secret ingredient to staying away from visits to the doctor....This is what i always think...You see...Fast food like fries and chips are always the favourite among us but they are always unhealthy.Vegetables and fruits are always rejected by children these days but they are the healthier food.Like I said before, we must eat healthily to prevent diseases from ''following'' us. Diabetes and high blood pressure are some of the diseases that are caused by eating unhealthily.Eating fruits and vegetables are rich vitamins and minerals which made them the best.At the age of three,(this is what I remember) I would always refuse to eat the vegetables my parents give me. As I grow, I realise that vegetables and fruits are not that bad.So, I am fond of vegetables and fruits. They are always sweet( not always...) and always brighten my day...The campaign the school is having is a great idea...I think it really encourage the pupils to eat more healthy food.Maybe we can have a week that if someone is caught eating healthy food can get a prize... That's all i got to say... BB..

Earth Hour

I bet this Saturday is going to be very exciting for my whloe family. We have never experience any of this before.Well...maybe only my family,it might be the whole Singapore. It is our first time doing this.Earth Hour is an annual international event created by the WWF (World Wife Fund for Nature/Wildlife Fund). It is held on the last Saturday of March that all households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on Earth's climate change.I think that people organise this event to remind everyone to save the Earth.Earth is where we live and we should protect it.For example,if people open more shop and the use of electricity increased, this will harm Mother Earth even more.We will have to switch off all the lights and all we see is darkness as most of the countries would switch off all the lights as the power generator stop generating electricity. My family would normally gather together with my grandmother, aunts.uncles and cousins on Saturday so maybe we could keep each other company.I not sure what would we really do on that night but like I said,it would be fun.Earth faces many other problems. Like air pollution, water pollution and most importantly, Global Warming. If the Earth starts to tilt even more, Singapore may snow or even flood. The ice is both side of the Earth is melting and the water in the ocean will increase and it would cover up Singapore as Singapore is so small.Everyone can help in keeping Mother Earth protected. If everyone of us on Earth plant a tree, there will be billions of trees everwhere. However, the amount of oxygen increase and the air would be fresher.I think events like this are very meaningful.

Passion For Learning

Passion for learning is just like having the self-discipline to study or to learn. It could be learning anything. It could be learning to bowl (like me...) or learning how to play the piano. We always hear our teachers saying having the PASSION FOR LEARNING is good. What exactly is PASSION FOR LEARNING....Hmm...Having passion for learning is good but you have to use it at the right time or place. If you have the passion for learning,it means that we have the chance to success. When someone chose the 'way' they want to go,they must have the passion for learning to strive towards the best. When I first started bowling,I never have the belief that would win or succeed but after my coach see the talent in me,he brainwash which made me have the passion to win.I train hard and all the perseverance really paid off.I won trophies and I actually became the vice-captain this year.Passion for learning can be shown in anyway.Like when you have a passion for something, you will do whatever it need to take just to achieve it.Passion could be anybody's mean anyone can have passion for anything.Like the elephants at the zoo. When the zookeepers train them for any animal show, they take the 'training' seriously and of course spend time with the keepers.Talking 'bout the elephants having passion,I think I have passion for anything.I am interested to learn about anything. We can develop passion if we just 'follow' the path we chose.

What will I defend?

What will I defend? Hmm......This question is important to us.What will we defend...Total Defence Day is when we talk about the British surrendering to the Japanese during WW2.This time,I am not talking about what Total Defence Day is about.(The question is what I kept repeating just now.)I would like to defend the things my parents used to do when they were young.Like everywhere was filled with trees and children playing outside together instead of staying at home playing computer games. After hearing lots of story from my parents,I feel that Kampong life is much more exciting than the life we have now.I am not saying that we should not have computer but what I think is that (I am sorry to this) parents should not spoiled their children with electronic games.I would not like those that are still young get addicted to electronic games, like me.I am trying to read more books to make myself stop thinking about computers and reading more books really helps.( Thats for me,not sure if others would do the same)Defending the Kampong life is really difficult now but I still hope that it would remain in some of our hearts. Maybe next time when I go to Malaysia or some other country,I would have the chance to experience it. Wishing to just jump into a river and swim is one of the things I would like to do.Having to express myself on this topic is cool.Hoping the air would be fresher every morning I wake up.(Of course there would not be gobal warming if this happen)I am changing the subject.Haha.Stay on course....Still not changing my mind of Kampong life. Haha. What would you defend?

Start School Later

I don't recommend starting school later because it would affect the schedule of some students.Although you can rearrange the schedule but I still prefer starting school at 7.30am.Take my schedule for example: I have CCA on Friday which is now 1.30pm-5.30pm.If starting school later,we would have to train to 7pm.Starting school later has disadvantage and advantages. The disadvange could be like what I said just now. Some children would have to rearrange the schdule which made their personal stuff ends later. The hours of sleeping would be the same too. The advantage is that if we sleep earlier, we could have more hours of sleep. After so much of my own thinking,I still prefer starting school at 7.30am.As we can get more time in the afternoon.I could take a nap then do my homework as this year is my PSLE.I need more time.I don't like studying in the night because stuudyibg in the night makes my brain excercise more.I have to take a long time to calm down. That mean I do not have enough sleep.I would not have the energy to study next day.It all go back to starting school later.

During the holidays...(The craze on Twilight with cousins)

The holidays were amazing. :-) I did lots of thing. Many amazing things actually...My cousins and I started crazing about the new movie Twlight. It was funny when you think of it. We started it when we went to watch the movie which is on the 30th of December last year(2008) When we went home,we could not stop talking about it. That night,I went to stay at their house so it was amazing that I could sleep at 4am and wake up at 10am.The next day was New year's eve and on that day,my cousins made a resolution.I just think it is impossible to come true. They wish that their life would be like the movie. What I think is that it is just lame. The movie is a fantasy. How can it possibly happen...Although the male lead is cute but it is just so impossible. 1 more thing during the holidays,I broke one of my record.I did not sleep for one whloe night. My uncle booked a chalet and we went there to play.I did not sleep and i still have the energy to play at Escape Theme Park. The night when I went home i slept at 7.30pm which is the earliest i slept.
